Why do we use Self-determination theory?

Self-determination Theory (SDT) of motivation forms the basis of all our therapy because of its proven effectiveness. Not only do we help clients discover their true sense of self, but we help them make changes that have a lasting, positive impact on their lives. 

SDT originated from the work of psychologists Dr Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, who first introduced the idea in their 1985 book Self-determination Theory and Intrinsic Motivation in Human Behavior. Deci discovered that humans have three basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. When these needs are met, we experience a sense of control, achievement and belonging in our lives – which boosts our motivation, engagement, resilience, mental health, and sense of wellbeing.
